World War One was filled to the brim with blood and gore. All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, is a novel that depict the horrors of the Great War. Erich Maria Remarque describes what the horrors of war do to these young soldiers. These men are shot at and some have legs blown off. They go through so much, and by reading the novel the reader is able to create an emotional contention.
Remarque shows how each man is effected by war. Each man is effected by the war differently. Some are scared and worried of death and some can barley function without their family. Although they all are scared, they all seem to have their own drive to keep them going through the hardest times. When they are losing men like it is money in Vegas, it makes the you feel like this is such a bad time and these men are so brave.
Remarque did an amazing job of showing how that there is still hope in the darkest moments. When they were in the graveyard and the man had been injured, I found it amazing that they would shoot him to put him out of his misery. Examples like that are the things that make this book so great. The way it is written make me feel guilty in a strange way. I feel like I should be out there fighting and I am a bad person for not doing so. The book reminded me of The Outsiders in a strange way--the way the author takes the time to tell about each characteristics is amazing to me. When something happens to that man, you are saddened. Also, they seem like best friends in both books. Not just real brothers, but they have their backs, no matter what. That is a quality that everyone hopes to have.
The book has evolved in my mind. It has a great flow between the battle scenes and the other important parts of the book. The book flows and every character has his own personality that shines in is own way.
The best part about that is that it strangely makes you pay attention to the characters in the book. It seems like the more you care for them, the more you want to read. In other books I have read, the character development is not always effective and compelling, but in All Quiet on the Western Front, the characters seem to be real.
