From coffins being blown out of the ground, suicide charges and trench warfare, this book has it all. All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque is a war novel about WWI. The main character, Paul Buamer is a 20 year old German solider fighting in WWI. He and his friends witness the horrors of war including seeing his friends die before their very eyes, what a prisoner of war camp is like and what its like being wounded during battle. This book opened my eyes, showing me the true horrors of WWI. At the same time, it showed me some things that really made me realize that soldiers make such a deep bond with each other .The book talks about what Paul is thinking about how, like how he realizes that German soldiers were just like the Allied forces soldiers. They were all normal people being plotted against each other, told by their officers that the other side started the war and that the enemy is coming to take over their land so they are fighting to defend their country. The author, Erich Maria Remarque fought in WWI as a German solider, he wrote this book to show people the horrors of war and to show what actually happened during war. Many civilians who were not involved in the war thought that war was full of glory and parades but the truth was completely different. I believe that Erich Maria Remarque wrote this book to tell people the truth about the war and the lies that the public have been told.
All Quit on The Western Front is a story told through the eyes of Paul Buamer, the main character. There are other characters like Kat, Kemmerich, Detering, Mullier, Tjaden, and Haie. In the beginning of the book he and his company just came back from the front and they had lost half of their troops. Later on, they are sent back up to the front, this is the first time that the reader learns about the horrors of war. After two weeks at the front, they come back to the base only 32 men strong. They came to the front with 150 men. Paul is let on leave and visits his family. His mother is sick and they believe she has cancer again. After finishing up visiting his family, he goes back for basic training. After finishing up training he arrives at the front and meets up with Kat and Mullier. Paul and his friends volunteer for a scouting mission, Paul is caught in the middle of a gun fight and hides in an artillery hole. While hiding a French solider comes up but Paul stabs him. For hours, Paul watches the man die slowly, but later try's to keep him alive. Finally, the man dies. Paul learns that his name was Gerard Duval, Paul learns that he was a printer and that he was married and had a child. Paul is determined to send a letter to his wife and child. Paul makes it back to the trenches and tells his friends what happened. This was the saddest part of the book for me because it showed how people still cared for each other even thought they were against each other in war. After awhile they go back to base and are assigned to stand guard at an abandon village. This is great for them because there is no fighting and they can do nothing and eat. After awhile they are brought back to the front. Here, Paul is wounded and has to go to a hospital. Paul get their and has to get his leg amputated. He and his friend Albert are sent to a Catholic Hospital, here they are treated well. After some time, Paul is able to walk with cruches because he is still not use to his prosthetic leg. His friend Albert;s health is going down hill. After some time, he is sent back up to the front with prosthetic leg. I found this rather shocking because he was would still not be able to fight very well, but they still send him up to the front with a prosthetic leg.
This writing piece changed how I thought about war. I always knew that war was awful, but not as bad as this. This describes that people are being shot to bits, people dying of mustard gas and much more things. Most of this book was enjoyable expet for the first two chapter because nothing really happened. After the first two chapters, the book became more enjoyable for me overtime. I was always intrigued by what was happening and Erich Maria Remeraque wrote this book very well because I was interested in it for most of the time. This book was full of very emotional things because their were so many sad things that happened. Stuff like this would happened all the time during war, this book opened my eyes through the perspective of Paul. This book changed how I thought about war and how lucky we are that we are not encouraged to join war and that I am living in a peaceful place right now. This book reminded me of the book War Horse because they are both about WWI and they both show how bad war is.
Finally, I have really enjoyed reading this book and it will impact my life forever and it is one of those books you will never forget. It has a very good plot, it is written very well and it gives a clear message that war is bad. It talks about what soldiers during WWI experienced on and off the battlefield. This is one of those books you will never forget.
